Members Update - August 11, 2011

Consider a donation to PT today and any gift received before October 31 will automatically double in value! Commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with a donation to September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. Help us turn grief into actions for peace. All donations received by 10/31/2011 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $20,000.00 by the Institute for Socioeconomic Studies Fund of Tides. This donation was made in memory of Leonard M. Greene, father of Flight 93 passenger Donald Greene. In June 2006, the New York Times published an article by Leonard Greene on how to befriend the Muslim world.

MEMBERS NEWS:

SC member Talat Hamdani has been named Human Rights and National Security Reform Fellow by the Rockwood Leadership Seminar. Congratulations, Talat!

PT EVENTS on and around September 11:

9/8: Subway Music in the Light of 9/11: Help fill the AFSC Meeting House at 15 Rutherford Place in New York City (just east of Union Square) to capacity on September 8. Bring your story and your friends while listening to music. We need more participants. Would you please consider participating in the event by sharing your story and your thoughts? Feel free to contact Katharina with any questions you might have. The only participating PT members so far are Robyn Bernstein and Antonio Aversano.

9/8 - 9/11: David Rimmer's "New York" will be performed at the Hudson Guild Theatre in downtown Manhattan. We hope you will attend and tell your family and friends about it as well. Follow this link for more details.

9/9: A conference at John Jay College by the title 9/11 After Ten Years: Cultural, Personal, and Historical Perspective:

"Nothing can adequately honor the pain of 9/11 survivors and the families of those who died in the disaster. It was too large an event, one that remains silmultaneously ever-present and elusive. At John Jay College, which lost 68 alumni that day, we feel a special connection to the significance of 9/11 and wish to probe some of its enduring meanings on the cusp of this tenth anniversary year. In three panels and some smaller breakout sessions, this conference will explore 9/11 in cultural and historical memory."

PT member Myrna Bethke will be among the presenters.

9/11: The Floating Lanterns Ceremony: Please, e-mail your message of hope to Katharina so it can be written on one of the paper lanterns dedicated to September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. The lanterns will be released to float on the Hudson River on September 11th after sunset. Your message should be no more than a very short sentence.

9/25: PT supports the 2011 Perugia-Assisi Peace March. 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of Aldo Capitini's first peace march as well as the wars, death and destruction committed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. The march calls attention to the urgent need for peace. At the request of the march organizers, Paul Arpaia will attend as a representative of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows.

10/6: PT supports Stop the Machine! Create a New World! on October 6. The D.C. rally marks the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. SC member, Paul Arpaia, will be there in person. Please spread the word!

OTHER IMPORTANT EVENTS:

8/28: We at September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows would like to acknowledge the opening of The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial on August 28. MLK's quote underlines our mission and we continue to be inspired by his prophetic words.
